Breast Unit Professor Pereira

Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon and Honorary Professor of Surgery at the University of East Anglia.

UK and International trainer in Oncoplastic breast surgery.  Convenor and Trainer for Surgical masterclasses in breast surgery worldwide.

Lead surgeon for the UK National Mastectomy and Breast Reconstruction Audit Programme, the first national study in the world looking at outcomes of breast cancer surgery, which led to the publication of “Best practice national guidelines for Oncoplastic breast surgery” (2012).

Programme Director for UK and International Specialist e-Learning Mastership Programmes at the University of East Anglia, Norwich and Programme Lead for blended learning courses in nursing, midwifery and specialist nursing commissioned by Norfolk & Waveney Healthcare Partnership. Director of Health Education England commissioned award-winning blended education Emergency Surgery programme.

Founder member of Norwich Medical School and member of MED Teaching Executive Committee, Norwich Medical School.

Examiner for the European Breast Specialist Examination Board (EBSQ), MD and MSc degree programmes.

Ex-Member of the Editorial Board of the “European Journal of Surgical Oncology” and author of multiple peer reviewed publications in breast, peripheral nerve reconstruction surgery and surgical audit.

Invited National and International speaker delivering over 200-lectures including key-note addresses.

Consultant Oncoplastic breast surgeon at JPUH and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of East Anglia.

Qualified at Nottingham University in 1989, completed research in Breast Oncology 1996. Specialist training in Yorkshire and obtained FRCS in 2000. Sabbatical in Edinburgh Breast Unit 2000. 

Interests include breast reconstruction and surgical training.

Associate Professor Sue Down FRCS (Eng), PhD, BSc(Hons), MBChB

Breast Unit Sue Down

Consultant Oncoplastic breast surgeon at JPUH and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of East Anglia.

Sue undertook her undergraduate and basic surgical training in Manchester and gained a PhD in Cancer Studies at the University of Birmingham. She completed her higher surgical training locally in the Eastern Deanery and then undertook a National Oncoplastic Fellowship in Birmingham, enabling her to gain experience in advanced oncoplastic techniques.

Current Clinical Lead for Breast Surgery at JPUH and Deputy Research Lead for the Trust. 

In addition to her clinical role, she is Course Director for four award-winning online Mastership programmes in Specialist Breast Surgery at the University of East Anglia, and is developing further courses in breast ultrasound and allied specialities.

Mr Alexander (Sandy) Leeper FRCS, MD

Breast Unit Alexander Sandy Leeper

Consultant Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgeon at JPUH.

Sandy has an interest in all aspects of breast disease, benign or cancerous and patients with a family history of breast cancer.  He utilises the latest oncoplastic techniques including therapeutic mammoplasty/mastopexy, partial breast reconstruction with local flaps, full breast reconstruction with implant and lipofilling techniques.

Other specialist interests include screen-detected breast cancer, impalpable cancer localisation techniques, risk-reducing surgery for patients with a family history of breast cancer and benign breast conditions.

Sandy joined the Breast Unit in August 2021, having completed a National Training Interface Group Fellowship in London, gaining extensive aesthetic and oncoplastic experience. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh and undertook his postgraduate doctorate MD in the Edinburgh Cancer Centre, developing in vitro 3D models of breast cancer. His core and higher surgical training incorporated working in a range of units within Scotland, Belfast and Norfolk.

Laura Smith, Physician Associate (PA-R) specialising in Breast Surgery

After completing a degree in Medical Physiology and Therapeutics at the University of Nottingham, Laura joined the University of East Anglia Physician Associate Studies Masters course to train to become a Physician Associate. She is a member of Faculty of Physician Associates and Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register (PAMVR).

Laura joined our Breast surgery team in January 2021. She undertakes a range of clinical tasks to support our consultant and nursing team including clinics, assisting in theatres and post-surgical care of patients.

Additional information

-          Medical micropigmentation/tattooing (areolar restoration).

-          Design of triaging algorithm to aid primary care referrals allocation to clinics.

-          Association of Breast Surgery Allied Health Profession representative.

-          Interest in developing roles for Physician Associates in surgical specialties.
