This autumn, the James Paget will open a brand new Marks & Spencer (M&S) Food to Go store in partnership with Compass Group UK & Ireland, the UK’s largest food service company.
The store, opening on Wednesday 12 September 2018, will offer visitors, patients and hospital staff the quality and innovative food and drink synonymous with M&S.
Freshly baked filled baguettes made on site, a large array of cold on-the-go products and a huge range of salads to go are particular highlights. A “hot fridge” concept will allow customers to quickly pick up hot food on the move and visitors to the new outlet will also enjoy barista served coffee.
As well as creating a space to pick up quality food and drink within the hospital, the M&S Food to Go will also include a 70-seater café for customers to relax and enjoy their meals. Recruitment is underway to find candidates for 25 roles in bakery, customer service, finance, operations and as baristas.
Nichola Hicks, Head of Facilities Management at the James Paget University Hospital, said: “This is an exciting development which brings benefits for our patients, staff and visitors.
“The new Marks and Spencer Food to Go store will replace Paget’s Café and its seating area, which has served people well for more than a decade, but is cramped and now in need of refurbishment.
“The store will provide fresh facilities including a ‘barista’ style coffee shop and brand new seating area. Creating the new outlet is costing our organisation nothing – and will provide a significant regular income stream in the future, which will be used to support healthcare at our hospital.
“The changes will give greater choice as our newly-refurbished Aubergine Restaurant – formerly just for staff – is now open to all, providing a range of hot, freshly-cooked meals throughout the day prepared by our in-house catering team.”

Quality food service is incredibly important for those visiting or working here and that is why we brought in the M&S, a brand much loved for its retail offering.”
The new-look Aubergine Restaurant opened for business yesterday Monday, 16 July, and for the first time it will be open to both staff and visitors to the hospital.
Following an extensive refurbishment project, the former staff-only restaurant, upstairs on the first floor of the hospital, will now serve fresh food to all – and will be the main place for staff and visitors to get refreshments while the complete refurbishment of the front foyer of the hospital takes place.
The restaurant will be open 8am to 8pm seven days a week and will serve a range of hot and cold meals, snacks and drinks.
Meanwhile Paget’s Café, in the main hospital foyer, will be offering sandwiches, snacks and beverages only between 8am and 3pm Monday to Friday until 20 July, when it will close to allow for the development of the foyer.
