Decembeard fundraising for Bowel Cancer UK - 03 December 2018

Decembeard fundraising for Bowel Cancer UK
03 December 2018

While December is usually known for a particular white-bearded gentleman (also known as Santa), this Decembeard you’ll find consultants and a range of other staff at our hospital sporting beards of a variety of colours to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK.

James Paget Bowel Cancer Surgeon Vamsi Velchuru is encouraging colleagues to join him in the Decembeard fundraising for the charity, which asks men to grow a beard or, if already bearded, to dye or decorate it during December to raise money for the cause.

On Saturday, 1 December, Vamsi (pictured) dyed his beard and is now collecting donations from colleagues, friends, family and anyone else who would like to contribute throughout December.

Vamsi says; “As a consultant, I will be seeing patients and relatives on a daily basis and, while it may be a little strange to see hospital staff with different colour beards, we hope everyone will understand why we’re doing this. The proceeds from the fundraising will go to Bowel Cancer UK to provide help, assistance and services for those with bowel cancer, and their families, and this is a way for us to show our support for the work the charity does to help our patients.”

More than 41,0000 were diagnosed with Bowel Cancer in the United Kingdom (2015). It’s also the nation’s second biggest cancer killer but it shouldn’t be, as it’s treatable and curable, especially if diagnosed early.

Bowel Cancer UK works to raise awareness, to provide information and support to anyone affected by bowel cancer and to fund research and training. You can find out more information about their work here – www.bowelcanceruk.org.uk
