Moving forward with cancer

27 March 2019

A special event aimed at inspiring local people with cancer to plan their lives for the future will be taking place in Great Yarmouth next month.

The Moving Forward with Cancer event takes place on Monday, 15 April, at the Star Hotel – and offers people who have been affected by cancer the chance to meet healthcare leaders and receive expert advice about health and wellbeing.

During the course of the event, there will be presentations from local healthcare leaders, information from local support groups as well as a ‘market place’ featuring stalls offering advice on health and well-being and therapies.

Overseeing the organisation of the event is Macmillan Survivorship Lead, Karen Flores, who is James Paget’s first cancer Survivorship Lead – a post set up with funding from Macmillan Cancer Support.

“I am delighted to have been given the chance to take forward this important role,” said Karen, who has nearly 40 years’ experience as a nurse.

“It looks to help provide both patients living with cancer and those who have completed their treatment with tailored support and guidance so they can plan ahead and live their lives to the full – and the event on 15 April fits perfectly with this aim.”

The new role is funded by Macmillan as part of their Living with and Beyond Cancer Programme, which recognises that more people than ever are surviving after a cancer diagnosis – but that the impact of the disease does not suddenly stop when treatment ends.

Macmillan Partnership Manager, Joy Moulton, said: “Cancer is not always life threatening, but it is life changing. Regardless of the diagnosis, life will never be the same again. By providing expert information and advice Macmillan helps people with cancer to live their lives as fully as they can.”

The Moving Forward with Cancer event is being held between 11am and 3pm on 15 April. It is being organised with support from the East of England Cancer Alliance and the Norfolk and Waveney Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP).
