Nursing Cadet apprenticeship programme launched

04 January 2021

***Please note; As of 9am on Wednesday 6 January, applications for this role have closed, due to the high volume of applications received. Thank you for your interest.***

A new route into nursing is being launched at the James Paget University Hospital.

The NHS Nursing Cadets programme will get underway in February, and applications are being taken now.

If you’ve been thinking about becoming a nurse and are aged 17 or over then you’re invited to find out more and, if you’re interested, to apply as soon as possible.

The Cadets programme is the latest initiative at the James Paget to encourage younger and older people to consider a career in nursing. Following success with our Health Academy, apprenticeships and Nursing Associate training, the James Paget is now providing a new opportunity for those with a caring personality or care background who would like to get into nursing but who may not have met the minimum maths, English or care qualification level to apply for previous opportunities.

The Cadet apprentices must undertake a Level 2 Healthcare Support Worker qualification, complete their care certificate in the first twelve weeks of employment and if they have not already achieved their English and Mathematics qualifications they will undertake these within their 15 month contract. They will undertake their course with West Suffolk College which is a 12 month programme with three months for end point assessment.

As this is an apprenticeship programme, you will be paid an apprenticeship wage, and there will be a clear pathway following successful completion of the 15-month Healthcare Support Worker Level 2 contract so that you then progress onto the two-year Trainee Nursing Associate programme with the UEA. This will enable individuals to work as Registered Nursing Associates.

Funding from Health Education England means the hospital will initially recruit eight NHS Nursing Cadet apprentices. There is no upper age limit for applications.

Applicants should note that this opportunity may close quickly, before the posted closing date, if we receive a high volume of applications.
