Visiting Arrangements
29 April 2021

New visiting arrangements are now in place at the James Paget University Hospital.

We recognise that hospital visiting restrictions have been extremely difficult for patients, families and friends – but they have been necessary to keep people safe during the pandemic.

Now that COVID-19 restrictions are being relaxed in the community, as infection rates have substantially decreased, we are pleased to be able to welcome more visitors back to our hospital in a way that keeps everyone safe.

Visiting to inpatient wards will be by appointment only, with patients allowed one visitor per day, for a maximum of one hour. Currently, two named visitors per patient can visit during any seven day period so families are asked to make this decision before booking an appointment. This particular restriction will be kept under review and any changes communicated via our website and social media channels.

Visiting times will be from 11am to 8.30pm every day, but slots will not be available during meal times.

To book a one-hour visiting slot, please ring:

  • 07435 554841

  • 07392 319889

  • 07775 801052

  • 07990 756451

  • 07387 103567

  • 07393 147142

The booking lines will be open from 9am to 3pm, seven days per week. The lines are likely to remain busy - so if you can't get through to one of our booking team on one number, please try another.

All visitors must wash their hands, wear surgical masks when entering and moving through the hospital and observe social distancing guidelines at all times. Visitors will be required to wear a disposable apron, which will be supplied by the hospital.

There are some exceptions to the new visiting arrangements: People wanting to visit our most vulnerable patients – including patients with learning disabilities or dementia as well as those receiving end-of-life care – should contact the relevant ward direct to discuss their visit.

In line with Government guidelines, visitors who have tested positive or are showing any symptoms of COVID-19, should not visit, to ensure everyone’s safety.

Visitors will only be allowed to visit patients who have been in the hospital for more than 24 hours. All visitors are asked to proceed directly to the ward and should not enter any other clinical area. Visitors who cannot attend a pre-booked slot should ring the booking line to cancel their appointment.

We anticipate that there will be high demand to book visiting appointments, and thank you in advance for your patience in contacting and speaking to the booking teams.

The Trust will continue to offer other ways for families to stay in touch with their loved ones while they are being cared for in our hospital:

  • Virtual visits: virtual visiting is available, using iPads. Patients can ask ward staff for the use of an Ipad so they can see and speak to their family and friends.

  • Letters to Loved Ones: a dedicated email address has been set up so that family and friends can send a message to a loved one in hospital. Messages are printed off and delivered to the patient. To send a message, please email LetterstoLovedOnes@jpaget.nhs.uk

  • Two Hearts: a keepsake ceramic heart can be given to both a family and a patient so that they can feel connected in the absence of being able to see one another every day. To access this service, please ring 01493 453300.

There are no changes to our arrangements for outpatient appointments, where patients can only be accompanied as follows:

  • One person can accompany a child or vulnerable patients – including those with learning disabilities, autism or dementia – to A&E or an outpatient appointment.

  • A partner can attend antenatal appointments, including 12 and 20 week ultrasounds scans, and the delivery suite.

  • One person can accompany a patient attending a cancer clinic appointment.
