Doctors mess renovation

30 May 2022

Our Doctors Mess – where our doctors can have a break away from our busy wards and departments - has recently undergone a renovation to improve facilities.

Doctors Mess - A large corner sofa, with seating at right angles is in a room with a large TV screen. A door to a garden area is visible behind the sofa.

The new look was officially unveiled on Friday 20 May and our hospital has been supported in this work by additional funding from the British Medical Association and Heath Education England.

Dr Hazel Stuart, Medical Director, said; “The Doctors Mess is especially important for the significant proportion of doctors who move regularly between hospitals as it provides an informal environment where doctors can build working relationships, support colleagues and study, and it is a vital place away from the clinical areas. The renovation will contribute to the delivery of safe and effective care by providing appropriate rest facilities for doctors who have long working weeks, and will enhance the education and development of our doctors, supporting the Trust’s aim of becoming an employer of choice.”

Junior doctors have been integral to ideas for the design of the refurbishment, enabling the delivery of a fully functioning space with enhanced rest facilities, a new kitchen and appliances, improved lighting and decoration, suitable changing areas and a new study/administration work area.
