Professional Nurse and Professional Midwife Advocates launched

01 February 2023

Chief Nursing Officer for England Dame Ruth May visited the James Paget earlier today to help us launch Professional Nurse and Professional Midwife Advocates (PNAs and PMAs) at our hospital.

Chief Nursing Officer Dame Ruth May with our Deputy Chief Nurse Jacky Copping, Corporate Matron Tracie Bitters and James Paget Chief Nurse Paul Morris at the launch today. All four - Ruth in her blue uniform, and our senior nurses in black uniforms, stand facing the camera smiling. they are standing in front of the mural drawn by East Coast College students.

PNAs and PMAs are members of our team who have been trained to provide support to nurses and midwives across the hospital, providing someone to talk to and someone who can help individuals to develop personally and professionally, with an emphasis on improving staff wellbeing, improving patient care, listening, and delivering quality improvements.

Today many of those who have qualified as our first PNAs and PMAs, and their nurse and midwife colleagues, gathered for the official launch which was attended by Ruth May.

Many of those speaking at the event emphasised the need to be there for each other, and to look after each other, with a focus on increased compassion and empathy, and the Advocate role will aim to support colleagues through the difficult times as well as providing advice and development guidance.

Following the launch we’d also like to say thank you to students from East Coast College who came along to draw the event for us – creating a new artwork for display.
