Funds raised for Neonatal Unit through Cornish Rat Race

06 July 2023

More than £250 has been raised for our Neonatal Unit after an epic fundraising run around the Cornish coast.

Tom Garrod – partner of Amy Garrod, Data Manager in our Cancer Research team – completed the 2023 Rat Race: Man vs Coast at the beginning of July.

The event is a demanding 25-mile race along the coast of Cornwall from Marazion beach, east of Penzance, across the county and then down the west coast to Lands End.

The sea is blue apart from nearer the rocks where it is white. In the foreground a group of six men climb a rocky path up towards the camera. The area around them has green plants, including ferns, and rocks visible.

The almost-marathon-length event takes in challenging and steep terrain including significant ascents, descents, rugged ground, rock scrambling and short swims and Tom managed to complete the entire course in a little over six hours.

Amy said; “He completed the course in six hours and seven minutes, coming 238th out of 636 competitors. In the process he raised £260 for the James Paget Neonatal Unit, who cared for our daughter Lily when she was born in November 2020. We are both so grateful to the Neonatal department for everything they did for us and our daughter and it is nice to be able to give something back.”

Tom, wearing blue, is pictured with his friend Billy, who also took part in the challenge.

Maxine Taylor, our hospital Charity Manager, said; “This was a fantastic achievement – thank you Tom, and Amy, for supporting our Neonatal Unit.”
