Great Yarmouth Road Runners hand over cheque for our Robot Appeal

26 July 2023

Tracey and Andrew from Great Yarmouth Road Runners stand either side of Maxine, our Charity Manager, all holding a large cheque between them. The photo has been taken outside the front of our hospital's main entrance, with a blue heart with NHS in white writing on the ground in front of them and the entrance to our Emergency Department behind them. All three are smiling at the camera.

Great Yarmouth Road Runners (GYRR) have handed over a £750 donation to our hospital charity Robot Appeal following their Promenade Five Mile race series earlier in the year.

GYRR are a Great Yarmouth and Gorleston based running club, which welcomes all abilities. They meet on Tuesday evenings either the Marina Centre in Great Yarmouth or, during the summer months, at Cliff Park Ormiston Academy in Gorleston.

They compete in a variety of events during the year, including fundraisers to raise money for different local charities, and in 2023 have hosted the Great Yarmouth Promenade Five Mile race series – three runs along the seafront held on 19 April, 3 May and 17 May – to raise funds for the James Paget Hospital Charity.

Fifty pence from each race entry fee was donated – totaling an amazing £750, which is going to our Robot Appeal.

Our charity is currently aiming to raise £1.6 million to fund a surgical robot, that will allow our surgeons to perform complex operations through small incisions with increased precision using enhanced three dimensional vision.

The robot is expected to bring many benefits for patients – allowing those living in the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area to access advanced healthcare inventions, reducing the length of stay in hospital following a procedure and reducing post-operative complications. It will also allow our experienced team the opportunity to train the next generation of surgeons in robotic and minimally invasive surgery across a range of specialties including colorectal surgery, gynaecology, general surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery, urology and ears, nose and throat.

Tracey Campbell, who is GYRR’s Race Director for the Five Mile series and also a Business Support Manager in the James Paget’s Division of Medicine, Diagnostics & Clinical Support, and Andrew Thomas, Chairman of Great Yarmouth Road Runners, formally handed over a cheque for £750 to our Charity Manager Maxine Taylor on Tuesday morning.

Maxine said; “We’d like to thank everyone who took part in these races and everyone at Great Yarmouth Road Runners for their support.”
