Lowestoft Mayor helps launch Paget Charity rose garden

18 July 2023

Georgina (George) our charity director, Maxine our charity manager, Lowestoft Mayor Sonya Barker and James Paget Chief Executive Jo Segasby stand next to the rose garden in Belle Vue Park. Two stand one side of the image and two the other. The Mayor wears her long red robes that are trimmed in turquoise blue, black and gold. The mayor also wears a large white collar, her chain of office and a black three-cornered hat trimmed in red and gold. George wears a blue pattern dress and Maxine and Jo both wear black trousers and white patterned tops. Behind them several large trees and bushes are visible, along with the rose garden in the centre. You can see a rose bush with white roses on the top of it and two smaller red roses, plus the QR code sign which is white with a red piece at the top with white writing on it that says 'rose garden'.

Lowestoft Town Mayor Sonia Barker has helped our hospital charity team launch a new rose garden which will raise funds for our Surgical Robot Appeal.

The rose garden, in Belle Vue Park in north Lowestoft, is now in full bloom after it was planted in November last year to mark the 40th anniversary of the James Paget hospital’s official opening. The garden was created to enable local people to remember loved ones through sponsoring the roses, and to support our hospital’s appeal to raise funds for a surgical robot.

Our charity is currently aiming to raise £1.6 million to fund the robot, that will allow our surgeons to perform complex surgeries through small incisions with increased precision using enhanced three dimensional vision.

This robot will allow patients in the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area to access advanced healthcare inventions and should mean a reduced hospital stay and less post-operative complications. It will also allow our experienced surgeons the opportunity to train the next generation in robotic and minimally invasive surgery.

Charity Manager Maxine Taylor said; “We’re looking toward the future to further enhance patient outcomes and be at the forefront of robotically assisted surgery across a number of specialties such as colorectal surgery, gynaecology, general surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery, urology and ears, nose and throat.

“The rose garden is one of the initiatives to raise money for the appeal and this could be a lovely way to remember a loved one. We are grateful to Lowestoft Town Council and the park team for allowing us to have the garden and for planting and maintaining the area for us.”

Plaques have been placed in the garden containing a QR code which will take you to our charity website so you can get more details of how you can make a donation in memory of a loved one, or alternatively there is a number to call to reach our charity team.

Councillor Sonia Barker – Mayor and Chair of Lowestoft Town Council – said; “On behalf of Lowestoft Town Council and all the people of the town we wish the NHS a happy 75th birthday.

“Set up in the aftermath of Second World War to provide health care free at the point of access to all across the UK, we celebrate the National Health Service of the past and present and look forward eagerly to the NHS of the future.  The rose garden here in Belle Vue Park has been planted to launch the Robot Appeal and, as Mayor of Lowestoft, I want to give the James Paget Charity every good wish for their appeal which will hopefully bloom successfully like the roses in the garden.”

At the top, on the red, is white writing which says 'Rose Garden - celebrate a loved one by donating here'. Underneath, on the white, is the James Paget Charity logo, which has the registered charity number on it and several multi-coloured seagull outlines on it, the Paget 40 logo, which has PAGET in black writing over the number 40 on a red flag-like design, the QR code with 'Scan me' underneath and the words 'donate via QR code or ring 01493 453348' on it.
