Breast care team attend national conference

02 June 2023

Some of our breast care team visited Northern Ireland last month to attend the annual Association of Breast Surgery Conference, with two of our surgeons among those playing key roles in the national Association.

James Paget breast surgeons Professor Jerome Pereira, Mrs Sarah Downey, Associate Professor Sue Down and Mr Alexander (Sandy) Leeper attended the two day event in Belfast, along with Breast Care Nurses Samantha Glee and Jill Swan, Clinical Fellows Rasheed Elayyan and Ibrahim Sallam, and Physician Associate Laura Smith.

Mrs Downey has now taken up the role of Vice President of the Association, with Professor Down continuing her role as Chair of the National Education and Training Committee.

The two full days of lectures gave the team the opportunity to hear research updates and more about the latest developments in the field and to share information with, and gain knowledge from, other experts.

The conference also included an exhibition highlighting new products and services, giving the team the chance to meet new and existing suppliers and to talk with other professionals.

Jill Swan said; “It was a good opportunity to reflect on and share practice and to meet up with breast surgeons, breast care nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team in breast care nationally.

“Our international fellows Rasheed and Ibrahim shared and presented our Unit’s work via poster presentations and we shared our experiences with Magtrace – a tracer aid for breast cancer surgery – and surgical techniques and Patient Reported Outcome Measures.”

A dinner dance was also held between the two days – and this was held in the Titanic Belfast.

One of our clinical fellows stands in front of the poster explaining one of the studies. The poster, which is blue writing on a white background, contains a lot of text and graphs and is on a grey display board. Our clinical fellow is smartly dress in a jacket and dark trousers and he is smiling at the camera. One of our clinical fellows stands in front of another poster on a grey display board. This poster is blue and white, with lots of text and images of breast surgery on it. Our clinical fellow wears a smart grey suit and light blue shirt and he smiles at the camera.

Some of our breast unit team are photographed at the bottom of the imitation Titanic stairs, leading to the ballroom. The photo has been taken in dim light and has seven people - consultants, nurses and a Physician Associate at the foot of the stairs. Some of the team are arm-in-arm and all are wearing smart evening wear.
