Cycle ride to raise funds for our Robot Appeal

09 March 2023

Four of our team will be taking part in a 200km cycle ride around the fens in April to raise funds for our Robot Appeal.

Three of the cycle riding team - surgeons Chris and Vamsi, and Jon - stand outside the front of our hospital, in front of the large James Paget logo sign. Vamsi, in the centre of the three, holds up a bicycle at head height, while Jon on the right holds a cycle on the ground. All three are wearing white T-shirts with our charity logo on.  A head and shoulders photograph of Carl wearing a white T-shirt with a James Paget logo on.

Chris, Vamsi and Jon are teaming up with Carl for the 200km cycle ride.

The James Paget Hospital Charity are currently looking to raise £1.6million to fund a new surgical robot which will allow complex surgeries to be performed, by our surgeons, with more precision through small incisions, using enhanced three dimensional vision.

The robot will provide local patients with access to innovative technology and the opportunity to access advanced healthcare inventions across specialties including colorectal surgery, gynaecology, general surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery, urology and ears, nose and throat. The robot will also allow the Paget to train future surgeons and develop research into robotic and minimal invasive surgery. It is expected to have many benefits for patients including reducing the length of stay in hospital and reducing post-operative complications.

To help raise the money to fund the robot, many of our staff are undertaking fundraising activities, and three of our surgeons – Carl Philpott, Vamsi Velchuru and Christopher Liao – are joining one of our Divisional Operations Directors – Jonathan Harrowven - to take part in a day-long 208km (129 mile) ‘Double Dutch’ cycling event.

The cycle ride is being held on Saturday 8 April (Easter Saturday), and starts from Huntingdon, touring March, Kings Lynn and Spalding before returning to the start. It is a flat tour of the fens with waterways, bulb fields and windmills on route, with participants starting off at 8am and expected to finish the course by 9.30pm.
