London Marathon run raises money for Sandra Chapman Centre

The photo shows six women - four of them in different colour nursing and health care uniforms, Christine in her running gear and Maxine, our charity manager, in a yellow dress. They all stand outside the outside entrance to the Centre and the entrance and some green trellis is visible behind them.

More than £1,500 has been handed over to our Sandra Chapman Centre following a fundraising London Marathon run in memory of a patient.

Christine Moore, pictured second from right, completed the marathon in April to raise funds in memory of her mum Patricia Hollick.

Patricia passed away four days after Christine found out that she had secured a place in the London Marathon and they had talked about who she should fundraise for.

Christine said; “Mum suggested running for the Unit as she battled cancer twice thanks to the amazing work this unit do. So I did the run for my amazing mum who I will cherish forever and who always had faith in me.”

After completing the marathon in five hours and 57 minutes she said the most difficult point was half way through.

“Getting there and thinking ‘now I’ve got to that all over again’ was hard, although the support from the crowd was amazing. As I had my name on my shirt a lot of people were shouting encouragement.  I wanted to do the marathon within five hours, so have entered the ballot for next year, along with my husband, so I can have another go.”

Christine has raised funds previously via a Much Loved website page for her mum and is continuing to raise money for the Centre, getting her work colleagues to join in too.

On Tuesday Christine, her husband Tim and her step dad, Patricia’s partner of 20 years, Peter Damerell, visited our hospital to thank the Sandra Chapman team and formally hand over a cheque to our Charity Manager Maxine Taylor and the team.

The money will go towards funding one of the special chairs for the Centre, which allow patients to sit in more comfort while receiving treatment.
