A James Paget nurse has received a national award for her work to support Lymphoedema patients.
Lymphoedema is a long-term chronic condition that causes swelling in the body’s tissues. It can affect any part of the body, but usually develops in the arms or legs.
Lymphoedema Clinical Nurse Specialist Christina Bater won the British Lymphology Society ‘Best Poster Presentation’ award for her research around compression hosiery – described as a vital element in lymphoedema practice.
In choosing her presentation for the award, judges said; “This clear, relevant and thorough poster presentation highlighted issues with hosiery prescription, and the risk to the patient of not receiving the correct garments in a timely manner, and proposed a solution to resolve this in their area.”
Christina said; “I’m so honoured to have received this award. About a year ago I was lucky enough to have secured a place on the research service evaluation quality improvement (QI) scholarship run by the James Paget and its regional partners. With the support of my mentor, I was able to undertake a QI project looking at the procurement of lymphoedema garments for patients within our service.
“We looked at ways of improving the experience of patients, to reduce delays and reduce inaccuracies in the garments received, and I’d like to thank everyone who supported this project.”
