James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust hosted a visit from Lord Markham and key members of the national New Hospital Programme to see the progress the Trust is making ahead of developing a new hospital at its site by 2030.
Lord Markham, Minister for the Lords and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health and Social Care, was welcomed by the James Paget’s Executive team on Wednesday, 27 September, and spent time talking to teams currently planning for the new hospital, as well as Trust Governors, patient representatives and staff.
Peter Aldous MP also attended alongside the New Hospital Programme visitors, as they were provided a tour of the James Paget, including its innovative, state-of-the-art Concept Ward, which opened in May 2023.
Alongside this, Lord Markham and colleagues were able to see the work being delivered by James Paget’s Estates and Facilities team to secure the RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) panels across the hospital.
Health Minister Lord Markham said: “It was great to visit James Paget hospital and meet with staff and key stakeholders to discuss their plans for the new hospital – including showcasing how their new proposed hospital will look using the standardised design and Hospital 2.0 construction.
“We are committed to delivering 40 new hospitals by 2030, expected to be backed by over £20 billion of investment, with three already open, with a further 23 schemes that are in construction or have started enabling works, of which two are expected to open this year.”
Following the tours, Lord Markham hosted roundtable discussions with clinical leaders and senior managers from across the hospital, as well as Trust Governors, patient representatives and Councillors. This included showcasing what the new proposed hospital will look using the standardised design and construction known as Hospital 2.0 – a clear vision of how hospital schemes can be delivered with greater efficiency and reduced cost.

- James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust received confirmation that it will receive full funding to be completely rebuilt by 2030. The James Paget is one of the seven hospitals affected by the deterioration of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) materials and, along with West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds, were already announced as part of the New Hospital Programme in 2020.
