Donation made to Centre in memory of Melvyn

11 January 2024

Pauline and Sherri stand with staff from the Sandra Chapman Centre in the lounge of the unit holding a large cheque. There are six people in the photograph - four, three women and a man, in nurse/ health care worker uniforms, Sherri who wears a light colour jumper, green jacket and black skirt and Pauline who wears a light colour jumper and black trousers. All stand facing towards the camera and smiling.

A cheque for £1,100 has been handed over to our Sandra Chapman Centre team following fundraising in memory of a patient of who received treatment in the unit.

Melvyn Laing received treatment at the Centre - which provides care and support to patients with conditions including blood disorders and cancers - for two-and-a-half years before he passed away in October 2023 and his family have been fundraising to say thank you to staff and to support the Centre and patients using the unit.

Last Thursday, on what would have been Melvyn’s 70th birthday, his wife Pauline and niece Sherri visited our hospital to handover the donation to the team.

The money was raised through fundraising events and donations made at Melvyn’s funeral.  Pauline and Melvyn had started a draw at their shop – Flowermania in Gorleston High Street – to raise funds for the Centre and over the Christmas period Pauline also donated £2 for every wreath sold in the shop.

Sherri held a clairvoyant night, with Natasha Keeler, who kindly provided her services free of charge, at the Mariners Compass pub in Gorleston in November to raise further funds.

The money raised will now be put towards equipment for the Sandra Chapman Centre to help support patients using the unit and we’d like to thank everyone involved in these events who made a contribution, including the team at the Mariners Compass and Natasha, and particularly Pauline and her family.

In addition to the Sandra Chapman Centre donation, Pauline has also handed over £100 in Melvyn’s memory to Jo and Julie of our Macmillan Cancer Care Navigator team.

Pauline stands with Julie and Jo in the Louise Hamilton Centre garden. Pauline is handing over the donation and this is held by Jo.
