One of our Cancer Specialist Nurses will be running the ‘Race for Life’ in Nottingham this weekend to raise funds for Cancer Research UK, following her own breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Tracey Noakes, who specialises in looking after patients with upper gastrointestinal cancer, was diagnosed with breast cancer six months ago. She says; “It was a huge shock for me, especially given that I work as a Cancer Specialist Nurse and live a healthy life. I kind of thought it would never happen to me but this was naïve of me since cancer affects 1 in 2 of us.
“I’ve had surgery followed by radiotherapy, the side effects of which have been pretty difficult, but it is finished now and I am on the road to recovery.
“My mum and my brother both died very prematurely from cancer and every year I have taken part in a Race for Life in memory of them. I never thought I would one day end up doing it for myself too, and so this year’s Race for Life is even closer to home for me and I am determined to give it my all.
“My son Sam suggested we do a Race for Life together so we are both taking part in the 10k in Nottingham on Sunday, 23 June. If anyone would be interested in sponsoring me I would be really grateful for your support.”
