James Paget celebrates winners of it ‘Paget’s People’ Awards 2024
At a glittering evening at Great Yarmouth Town Hall on Friday 18 October, James Paget Hospital celebrated its staff at the annual ‘Paget’s People’ award ceremony.
Across 17 award categories, over 200 in attendance at the ceremony found out who had won an award, selected from over 800 nominations that had been provided by patients and staff at the hospital.
The Paget’s People award ceremony was supported and delivered by the James Paget Hospital Charity, and the award categories were kindly sponsored by companies and patients that wished to show their recognition of the hospital and the hard work of staff.
This year, the Paget’s People Awards featured several new categories, alongside longstanding awards such as Teams and Individuals of the Year, and the Gold Patient Choice award, sponsored by the Eastern Daily Press.
Described as a dependable, well valued member of the CT and MRI department, whose patient care and general helpfulness with relatives and members of the public is outstanding, Fabian Yaxley won the Paget’s Person of the Year in the Clinical category, sponsored by Plumbase.
Ben Smouton, who was nominated for being hardworking, dedicated and helpful, going above and beyond to maintain services in our Theatres, won Paget’s Person of the Year in the Non-Clinical category, sponsored by Tesco Lowestoft.

In a new award for 2024 highlighting the James Paget core value of ‘Respect’, Orthopaedic Consultant Dev Khurana won the inaugural Respect award sponsored by Tesco Extra Great Yarmouth, recognising their active role at meetings and events both at the hospital, and as part of our wider health and care system that promote diversity and inclusion.

The ‘Working Together’ award, another new category at this ceremony and sponsored by R G Carter, went to the team of Daryl Bourn and Marica McHugh from the Mortuary and Bereavement Team, and the hospital’s Armed Forces Advocate Chris Blyth, for their work in providing a funeral for a veteran who sadly died at the hospital with no funeral plans in place, attended by over 100 local veterans.

The Team of the Year award in the Non-Clinical category, went to the hospital’s Catering Team, who had overcome significant challenges in providing patients and staff with nutritious food options over the last year. In the Clinical category, the Team of the Year went to Ward 17, who were commended for providing excellent care for both haematology and oncology patients, and their enthusiastic, knowledgeable nursing team. Both Team awards were sponsored by Plumbase.

The hospital’s Theatres Green Working Action group won the new ‘Sustainability’ award, sponsored by Darwin Group, for their work in introducing more sustainable resources and equipment in the care of patients, choosing effective, greener alternative processes for staff, and trialling reusable supplies and cleaning techniques.

The Ward-based Clinical Pharmacy Technicians took home the ‘Learning Into Action’ award, sponsored by Morgan Sindall, a new category recognising teams or individuals that have showed initiative and learning in their roles, recognising their new way of supporting wards to ensure patients received medicines rapidly and effectively.

The ‘Rising Star’ award, sponsored by Haven Rotary 2, was won by Jess Webster, who has recently become a permanent Therapy Assistant and is described as bringing a youthful and vibrant approach to their work, supported by sound competence and dependability.

‘Volunteer of the Year’, also sponsored by Morgan Sindall, went to Jeffrey Drayton, well known to children, young people, families and staff on Ward 10 in the James Paget for the smiles he brings to the faces of everyone on the ward with his magic tricks and balloon sculptures.

Mother-daughter team ‘Tia’s Treasures’ won the ‘Fundraiser of the Year’ award, sponsored by Tesco Caister, for their tireless fundraising for the hospital charity, both around the hospital, and through raising awareness of their activities and impact online.

Leaders of different kinds at the hospital were also awarded during the ceremony – Jonty Yazbek won the inaugural ‘Change Leader’ award, sponsored by Capsticks, for their dedication to fostering an environment of continuous and sustainable improvement in health and care, and supporting positive change for our patients.

Sarah Burroughs won the ‘Outstanding Leadership’ award, also sponsored by Capsticks, for their nursing leadership of Theatres and within the Surgical Division, recognising their hard work in working with staff to improve services.

The EDP Gold Patient Choice award was won by Luana Silva, a Registered Nurse Associate who was praised for the care they provided to a palliative care patient, and the support and understanding they showed to the patient’s family and carer.

The hospital’s Governors’ Award went to Susan Pinkney, who was said to embody the hospital’s values in how she interacts with everyone, and was described as an all-round lovely, caring person. This award was sponsored by Mr Briggs, a patient who said he received fantastic care from the hospital, and wished to support the Hospital Charity and our staff awards.

The James Paget’s Chair and Chief Executive presented their individual Commendation Awards to reward staff that deserved recognition from entries received during the Paget’s People nomination process. Both Commendations were sponsored by the Rotary Club of Great Yarmouth Haven.

Mark Friend, Chair of the James Paget, awarded the Nursing, Midwifery and AHP Research and Evaluation Service the Chair’s Commendation for their work in supporting over 30 projects to come to life through their scholarship programme, and for the success of their embedded researcher model, which is the first in the UK of its kind.
