Pelvic health during and after pregnancy online sessions

17 October 2024

The local Perinatal Pelvic Health Service will hold their next ‘Pelvic health during and after pregnancy’ information session online on Wednesday 23 October at 1.30pm.

This session is an ‘After pregnancy’ session and is recommended for anyone who is from six weeks to 12 months postnatal.

It is common for people to not give their pelvic floor muscles a thought before pregnancy or even before birth. However, during pregnancy and in childbearing years it can be important to consider the health of your pelvic floor.

Your pelvic floor has four main roles:

• Control - It helps you to control wee, wind and poo.

• Support – It acts like a hammock to support your pelvic organs (bladder, womb and bowel) and keep them in the correct position.

• Sexual function – They can help improve sex by increasing your sensation.

• Stability - They help to keep your pelvis and hips stable.

Pregnancy can be a time when these muscles become under pressure. During vaginal birth the muscles can become stretched and damaged which may cause problems such as leaking urine when coughing and sneezing.

The pelvic health information sessions are designed to provide information to support you on your pregnancy and postnatal journey with pelvic health top tips and guidance on pelvic floor recommended exercises.

It’s recommended all pregnant women and birthing people book onto two sessions; one aimed at pregnancy, the other after pregnancy.
