Providing high-quality renal care across Great Yarmouth and Waveney, our Renal Department delivers specialist services for patients with a wide range of kidney-related conditions.
At the heart of our care is the Haemodialysis Unit, which provides life-sustaining dialysis treatment to approximately 100 patients who have lost kidney function.
We operate 18 dialysis machines across three daily shifts, ensuring timely and consistent care. The unit is staffed by a committed team of around 14 registered nurses and 12 healthcare assistants across various grades, all focused on delivering high-quality, compassionate care.
We maintain strong clinical links with the Renal Team at Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital (NNUH), working collaboratively to ensure seamless care across the region. Our department is led by three Consultant Nephrologists who oversee both inpatient and outpatient renal services.
Our patients present with a variety of complex medical conditions. While diabetes and high blood pressure are among the most common causes of kidney failure, we also care for individuals with a range of inflammatory and autoimmune kidney diseases.
In addition to haemodialysis, our Renal Department provides:
- Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) services, led by a specialist nurse practitioner who works closely with the medical team to deliver education, monitoring, and treatments such as EPO and intravenous iron.
- Vascular access reviews, supporting safe and effective dialysis.
- Dedicated renal inpatient beds, allowing us to manage acute and complex renal cases within a specialist setting.
- Post-transplant care, in collaboration with regional transplant services.
- Hypertension management and support for other renal-related conditions.
We are proud to contribute to renal research programmes, helping advance nephrology and improve outcomes for patients across the region.
Referrals to our service are typically made by the renal medical team, who receive referrals from GPs and other specialist services.
