Respect, Dignity, Nutrition and Hydration

Nutrition and Hydration

Nutrition and Hydration is important for general health and wellbeing, it requires particular consideration during times of illness, disease and injury and this is because the body’s need for nutrients at these times is greater for the purpose of repair and recovery.

Therefore it is vital that patients in hospital receive adequate nutrition and hydration.

All patients staying in hospital will receive:

  • A nutritional assessment of their individual needs.
  • If appropriate a referral to the hospital Dietetic Team for on-going advice and support.
  • Nutritional guidance and advice.
  • Assisting patients in their selection of healthy food choices.
  • Actions if patients are unable to meet their nutritional needs.

Each ward holds a pictorial menu to enable patients to indicate meal choices should this be required.

Respect and Dignity

One of our Trust Values is 'Respect' and within this we aim to provide a welcoming and positive attitude; to be polite, friendly and interested in people; to treat people fairly and to value and respect people as individuals.

Definition of Dignity:

"Dignity is concerned with how people feel, think and behave in relation to the worth or value of themselves and others.

"To treat someone with dignity is to treat them as being of worth in a way that is respectful of them as valued individuals." - RCN 2008

High quality services that respect people's dignity should have a zero tolerance for all forms of abuse, should support people with the same respect you would want for yourself or a member of your family, treat each person as an individual and enable people to maintain the maximum possible level of independence, choice and control.
