A team from James Paget Hospital presented their innovative new service at the British Liver Nurse Association annual meeting, which was held between 8th to the 10th October 2025.
Victoria Gibbs (Senior Sonographer) and Tanya Chapman (Advanced Liver Nurse Specialist), leads of the James Paget's innovative One Stop Hepatocellular Carcinoma Care Surveillance Clinic, were chosen as one of four presentations from across the UK at the British Liver Nurse Association annual meeting in Belfast.
Liver cancer is the fastest rising cause of cancer related deaths in the UK, with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accounting for 85% of all liver cancers. NICE recommends people at high risk of HCC should receive six monthly surveillances of imaging, bloods and clinic review, resulting in up to eight appointments disseminated throughout each year. Through service evaluation it was concluded the current service had a low uptake and high non-adherence rate.
From this, a collaborative team of imaging and hepatics was formed to innovate a one-stop surveillance clinic whereby imaging, blood monitoring and clinic review operated at the same appointment, condensing the many disseminated appointments to semi annual.
The establishment and success of the new clinic saw the team asked to present at the British Liver Nurse Association annual meeting.
