New-look Sandra Chapman Centre garden unveiled

Our new-look Sandra Chapman Centre garden has been officially unveiled after work to transform the area by a team from Morgan Sindall Construction.

The new look has seen replacement paving slabs and a new pergola installed, new benches, tables and seating put in place and plants added, while maintaining tributes to patients and treasured items that have previously been donated.

Morgan Sindall Project Manager Ben Virdee and his colleagues liaised with our Centre – which supports patients with malignant and non-malignant conditions, including blood disorders and cancers – to see what they could do as a goodwill gesture, free of charge, to assist patients and staff. The team at the Centre identified that it would be nice to tidy the garden area and Morgan Sindall decided to go a step further to refurbish the external seating area and replace key items including the slabs and the pergola.

Ben said; “With the assistance of our supply chain, and LDD, we wanted to give something back to patients and staff to recognise the truly amazing service that the Sandra Chapman Centre provides. The nurses, consultants and all other key members of staff that work between Sandra Chapman and Ward 17, all work tirelessly to ensure all patients and families are well looked after. Whether it be the middle of the night or early hours of the morning, nothing is ever too much. I hope they all realise just how much of a positive impact they have on the lives of many families within the local area. This is just a small something that we’ve been able to provide, alongside our trusted supply chain, which will hopefully make an impact on those that work and visit the centre over the coming years.”

Sandra Chapman Centre Senior Sister Liz Alyward said; “We love the new look garden, which has ensured that memorials to patients have been preserved while giving the area a bright new look. The new paving, new seating and new pergola all look great and we know patients and relatives using the Centre will appreciate the garden as a quiet space to spend time in, with both sunny and shady areas to sit in. We’d like to thank Ben and the whole team involved in the project for their hard work.”
