Experience:
A graduate of Leicester University Medical School, Prof Philpott completed his basic surgical training in the University Hospitals of Leicester before undertaking a period of research into developing apparatus for testing the sense of smell. His specialist training was completed in East Anglia, during which time he spent a year at the St Paul’s Sinus Centre in Vancouver, Canada learning advanced skills in endoscopic sinus surgery for inflammatory diseases of the nose and sinuses as well as tumours of the sinuses and anterior skull base. His main clinical interests include the medical and surgical treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis, allergic fungal rhinosinusitis and other sino-nasal disorders, as well as addressing functional and cosmetic aspects of the nose through rhinoplasty.
Prof Philpott also spent time at the Dresden University Smell & Taste Clinic learning techniques for assessing and researching the sense of smell. As Professor of Rhinology and Olfactology at the University of East Anglia, he is responsible for leading research into disorders of the Ear, Nose and Throat as well as educating trainee doctors in the specialty. One of his primary objectives has been establishing a centre for the treatment and research of smell and taste disorders, as there was previously no national centre in existence. He now leads a £3.2 million programme of research into chronic rhinosinusitis. He also supervises laboratory research into biomarkers for the disease and new trials into treatments for smell disorders.
