Lung Cancer Screening

If you’re aged 55–74 and have ever smoked, you could be eligible for a free Lung Health Check at James Paget University Hospital.

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in the UK, often because it is diagnosed too late. The Lung Cancer Screening Programme at James Paget University Hospital (JPUH) aims to change that by detecting problems early, when treatment is simpler and more successful.

This NHS programme, previously known as the Targeted Lung Health Check, is offered to people aged 55 to 74 who are current or former smokers, as they are at higher risk of developing lung cancer.

If you are eligible, you will receive an invitation based on your smoking history recorded with your GP. It’s important to ensure your GP record is up to date.

Screening involves two simple steps:

This award winning programme at the James Paget has helped more than 100 people to be diagnosed with cancer at an early stage since the screening was launched in November 2022, saving lives.

If you’ve ever smoked - even if you quit years ago - taking part in screening could make a life-changing difference. Early detection means better chances of successful treatment and living a longer, healthier life.
