Behind our main A&E, within our Emergency Department
Our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Unit opened in the autumn of 2025.
We've introduced it as a way of providing urgent medical care more efficiently to our patients.
SDEC is a tried and tested method used by NHS hospitals across the country – and sees a team of specialists provide prompt assessment, diagnosis and treatment to patients, with the aim of avoiding an overnight stay in hospital.
SDEC offers benefits to patients, including quicker access to care and reduced waiting times, while preventing unnecessary admissions to hospital.
It also benefits hospital staff by reducing pressure on busy emergency departments and ensuring that beds on our wards are available for those that need them.
Our SDEC is based in an area of the hospital which once was home to our orthopaedic outpatient services, now based in a new building on the northern part of our site.
The creation of our SDEC unit is another example of us modernising our existing building for the benefit of our patients, until we move into our new hospital.
You can find out more about the creation of our SDEC unit, and how it will benefit our patients, by viewing the two short videos below.

In this video, filmed during the construction of the Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC), Acute Medicine Consultant Dr Dominic Giles explains the benefits that the SDEC will bring for patients.
