As we head towards another week of hot weather, we wanted to remind everyone of the importance of remaining hydrated throughout the day.
Proper hydration is essential for keeping our bodies working properly – and preventing fatigue, headaches and dizziness.
It also plays an important role in warding off potentially serious conditions, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs).
In our hospital and in the local community, we have seen an increase in patients who are needing treatment for UTIs – a rise which has coincided with the prolonged period of hot weather.
Dehydration increases the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs), particularly in older and vulnerable patients.
UTIs can cause symptoms such as fever and vomiting and, if left not treated promptly, can lead to serious complications, including bloodstream infections requiring a hospital stay.
Therefore we are urging people who are pre-disposed to UTIs, or are caring for someone who suffers from regular UTIs, to pay particular attention to hydration during the continuing hot weather – and ‘think to drink.’
Water is the best and most effective liquid for everyday hydration; it is recommended that you should aim to drink 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid a day although you may need more if you are in a particularly hot environment.
